"What are you reading?". This was the first phrase that caught my attention in your book. Not the first sentence, but this one. In a world that everyone is addicted to TV series and social networks, someone reading a book is really hard to find nowadays. Before I read this book, I thought I was a good reader (I'm still one of the few women today that goes crazier in a bookstore than in a fashion store), although I wish I had more time for it (after working hard everyday, I usually sleep on the first page when I take my book before going to bed). But when reading about how many books you and your mom read in a short period, I had to reconsider myself as a heavy reader...
Besides, I had to reconsider myself as a selfless person, after seeing how much your mom did for the refugees and for anyone she met. I love to help people and currently I teach English to public school students, in a wonderful Brazilian NGO. In a way, as your mom did, I also help teenagers and adults to hope for a better future in their lives. But, of course, in a much smaller extent than she did!
I ran into "The end of your life book club" in a second-hand bookstore, where I usually exchange my own books for some other ones to read. I didn't have any recommendation before, but I became interested in the story since I read the synopses. For me, beside telling us about your mom's illness and giving us a whole list of book recommendations, this book taught me about family relationships, and especially about love. Her story was told in such a sensible way that it was not the most important part. For me, her love for everyone and the way she influenced people's lives was the food, while her treatment and the book club were the restaurant decoration.
Although I knew how the book would end, I cried a lot when I finished it. I cried for seeing such a great person to go but, most of all, because I wish I would've met her. And then, soon I smiled, because I thought how lucky I was to have read this book and get to know her a little. So this letter is to thank you for sharing her life with us and inspiring all the world.
Receive my love for you and your family.
Mariangela
